Emily Peacock, Soft Diet

Fri, Jan 09, 2015 - Sat, Feb 07, 2015

Opening reception: Friday, January 09, 7:00 - 10:00pm

Soft Diet is an endless supply of blue gloves, sage green walls, red Jell-O, bright trash bags, and wilted balloons and flowers. From humor and mystery to repulsion and fear, Emily Peacock offers up a body of work on the hyper-awareness that came from facing the mortality of her biggest collaborator.

"The tactile experience of taking care of someone made the touching and feeling of the photographs and objects even more important... These vernacular items took on a more poignant meaning as I combined, destroyed, manipulated and isolated them in the face of my mother's mortality."

Many of the works in Soft Diet combine the sentimentality of photography and film with the harsh reality of the inanimate object. Peacock divulges what lies beneath the romanticism of memory; a place where the dissatisfaction of the present meets the fantasy of an edenic past.
